Mother's Day

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?"  The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't, Dear," she said, "I have to sleep with your daddy."  A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: "The big sissy."

The security of my ‘living at home’ years had much to do with the steadfast determination and love-motivated guidance of my mother.  She went to be with her Lord at seventy-six years of age. We shall meet again.

Many of us have or had the good fortune of a mother’s love and a mother’s presence in the warm summer days of life and in the thunderstorms of life.  A mother who loves her children deserves our praise.  For the first forty-four years of my life, I was cared for and prayed for by my loving Christian mother.  Being the mother of eight boys was no simple task.  I remember her telling me in later years, that she knew she needed God above all to help her as a mother.  She had a mathematical mind, a strong will, a restless spirit and an unshakeable faith in God.  Like my dad used to say, “I rule the roost and she rules the rooster!”  The security of my ‘living at home’ years had much to do with the steadfast determination and love-motivated guidance of my mother.  She went to be with her Lord at seventy-six years of age. We shall meet again.

Even if we have not a “motherly” model, we are nonetheless able to praise our biological mother for giving birth to us, the gift of living.  For some of you, someone else stepped in to take up the role of mother for you.  What a touching affirmation to know that one lady cared enough to choose us as their son or daughter.

The thread that ought to flow through the lives of every mother is faith in God, the God who gave His Son, Jesus Christ, for the payment of our sins.  The classic Scripture of Proverbs 31 says, “a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised.  Reward her for all she has done.”  Remember with gratitude or reward with kindness, that mother who made such a difference in your life.
