Happy Canada Day!

Canada, our home and native land.  A nation of thirty-six million people with a life expectancy of eighty-two years.  A geographically vast country stretching from coast to coast to coast: the Atlantic, the Arctic and the Pacific.  A multicultural country where each citizen may carve out a home.  The recent display of unbelievable generosity of Canadians for our city of Fort McMurray only enhances one’s appreciation of the core compassion of our Canada.

God keep our land glorious and free.  The Apostle Paul writes to the first century Christian leader, Timothy.  His inspired writings remind us of the importance of prayer on behalf of our nation.  “I urge you…to pray for all people.  Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.  Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.  This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.”  (1 Timothy 2:1-4).  This admonition reminds us to leave no one outside of the circle of our prayers, “pray for all people.”  Also, “all who are in authority” are to be the recipients of our intercessions.  We certainly may have preference of political parties and leaders, yet prayer is to be without boundaries.  Prayer to God our Savior on the behalf of others leads to peacefulness in the land.  In the context of law, order and good governance, the truth of the Gospel may be circulated, with lessened persecution.  The ultimate mission and message of God is that “there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity – the man Christ Jesus.  He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.”  (1 Timothy 2:5-6).

Prayer to God our Savior on the behalf of others leads to peacefulness in the land.  In the context of law, order and good governance, the truth of the Gospel may be circulated, with lessened persecution.

On this Canada Day weekend, let us pause to pray for someone who is not on our mental prayer list.  Pray also for our federal, provincial and municipal leaders.  Whether it be the first or the twenty-first century, prayer is still essential.
