An Astonishing Rescue

A few days ago, I went with my family to see the movie Dunkirk. If you’re not familiar with the story, I’ll give you the breakdown (without spoilers).

From the 26th of May to the 4th of June, 1940, a desperate situation occurred on the shores of France. Hundreds of thousands of British and French troops were surrounded by the enemy—cut off from the rest of their comrades. They had nowhere to go, except into the sea. The account of their deliverance is both astonishing and heartwarming because rescue came in a way that no one expected.

I’ll let you watch the movie to find out the rest. However, this made me think about how Jesus rescued us from sin and the power of the devil. As Paul said to the Ephesians: “…Remember that you were at…[one] time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

My point is this: We had nowhere to turn, no one to run to to save us from our sins... Except Christ. Just like those soldiers who were saved in a way that no one could have expected or foreseen, God sent His only Son to save you and I!

Let’s praise God today for sending us Christ when we had no hope. And let us never lose the wonder that He saved us!"
