The Captain of the storm. Nosco hums away in the lower regions of the NorthLife facilities of Fort McMurray. Nosco is the name given to the distribution centre of NorthLife Church. Literally hundreds of people are having their needs met at so many levels. It is amazing to watch how God provides as we extend practical love to whoever stops by, regardless of background, culture or religion. The Soup Kitchen has moved outside providing a summer-time barbeque lunch for whoever needs a meal. People are showing up whom we have not seen before. The main level of the church is hosting more than one hundred children in the first Day Camp of the season. The joy (and squeals) of the children echo throughout the auditorium as they play games, cheer their teams on and listen to the Bible Story of the day. The park adjacent to the church comes alive as all these children and their volunteer friends parade over to enjoy afternoons of sunshine and fresh air. After all, camp is not camp without a good dose of the out-of-doors.
We are in a special season of opportunity. God help us not to squander or miss the uniqueness of this hour of service. For many, the aftermath of the wildfire storm continues.
Nosco, Soup Kitchen, Day-Camp are all touching lives in the name of Jesus. All happening simultaneously! I could not help but observe that in the midst of the storm of the wildfire aftermath, God is using His people to make a difference in the lives of others. One great principle of healing, as we continue through this time of adjustment, is to resist isolation and become engaged with others - especially those who at this very time can use a helping hand, a reassuring word or a listening ear.
We are in a special season of opportunity. God help us not to squander or miss the uniqueness of this hour of service. For many, the aftermath of the wildfire storm continues. Homes have yet to be rebuilt and uncertainties awaken many in the night hours. Yet, Jesus is the captain of the storm. One of the Bible Stories that I reminded the Day Campers of this week was when Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee with a word, “Hush”. No matter how vicious the storm and no matter how seemingly inadequate our boat, with Christ in the vessel we shall make it to the other side.
