From the vantage point of several stories up, it is captivating for me to watch the construction of a professional building next to our condominium complex in downtown Fort McMurray. I periodically snap a picture with my cell phone to record the progress. Excavators, front-end loaders, dozers, skid steer loaders, telehandlers, backhoe loaders, trucks and compactors have been on-site at one time or another. Specialized crews come and go, completing their specific tasks. It is amazing to me that with the passing of many weeks, the foundation of the building is still not fully finished. Which brings me to the main point – foundations are very important. The whole superstructure of the facility will only be as strong, safe and enduring as the foundation upon which it stands.
We discover His teachings in the Holy Scriptures. Some of His teachings were directly from his lips: the Sermon on the Mount for example.
So too with our lives. Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27 NLT). No more solid foundation can be laid than the foundation of hearing and obeying the teaching of Jesus who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” We discover His teachings in the Holy Scriptures. Some of His teachings were directly from his lips: the Sermon on the Mount for example. Much of his teaching came through the writings of his followers such as Matthew, Mark, Luke, Peter, James, John and Paul. Time invested in the Bible and prayer, combined with obedience, ensures that we are laying a strong foundation for life now and life forever.
