Assurance by the Written Word

Sir Walter Scott, arguably Scotland’s greatest literary genius, on his deathbed surrounded by a personal library of 30.000 volumes, says to his son-in-law, “Bring me the book.”  “What book?” says his son-in-law.  The Book, the Bible, there is but one book.”  We sometimes explore the questions, “How can we know for sure that we are saved?”  “How can we know for sure that we are going to heaven when we die?”  One objective answer lies within the trustworthiness of the Bible, the written Word of God.  The Bible points us to Christ.  The written word leads us to the Living Word, Jesus Christ.

Rather, we are confident that the Bible is true and we believe in Jesus as the giver of eternal life by virtue of His sufficient sacrifice on the Cross as payment for our sins.

John, the early follower of Christ and an author of Scripture writes, “And this is what God has testified:  He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.  I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”  “But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing in him you may have life through the power of his name.”  I especially like the phrase, “you may know.”  We do now have to wish, hope or wait!  We who trust Jesus as our Saviour and Lord know we are saved and heaven-bound.  We are not arrogant.  Rather, we are confident that the Bible is true and we believe in Jesus as the giver of eternal life by virtue of His sufficient sacrifice on the Cross as payment for our sins.  The blood (death) of Christ saves us – the written Word of God assures us!  Remember this children’s song?  “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”  Basic but true just the same!
