Bloom Where You’re Planted

The Christmas Season had passed yet its impact was just beginning.  An elderly woman named Anna came along at the very time that Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph in the presence of Jesus.  What a scene!  Every participant in this truly holy huddle, were praising God in amazement over this promised Deliverer!  Anna began praising God in the presence of Jesus and she talked about this child to everyone who had been waiting for God to bring deliverance.  Anna was a gifted prophetess who knew that the great plans for Israel and humanity lie within the future acts of this infant.

An interesting note about Anna, arising from Luke 2:36-38, is that she never left the Temple in Jerusalem but stayed there day and night constantly worshiping God with fasting and prayer.  Years ago a song was penned and sung entitled “bloom where you’re planted.”  This could be certainly said of Anna.  Having lost her husband just seven years after their marriage, she came to the conclusion that her ministry was to be localized.  Her geographical space was very limited yet her spiritual influence knew no limits because she knew how to pray.  Yes, prayer was her ministry.  Her prayers reached heaven and reverberated back to earth – still impactful as millions read of her life today.  One does not have to travel far to touch the lives of others.

Of course, the Temple in Jerusalem was a hub of activity, especially at festival seasons.  I somehow can picture Anna joyfully interacting with pilgrims as they entered the Temple precincts to sacrifice.  She was one of those precious saints that was always there to welcome and greet others.  Perhaps her fasting and prayers had much to do with the many she met in the confines of her situation.  She would make a great greeter in the foyer of any church today!  From foyer to the throne of God would go the concerns of others!  A widow yet what a widow!  She has pointed untold persons to Christ!  Anna inspires us in so many ways.   Life will have hardships, unforeseen events and physical limitations yet as we learn to praise God and look to Jesus, we shall complete the destiny God has for us.
