Home is...

I am taxiing down the runway of the Fort McMurray airport thinking of the brief layover in Toronto and then the final flight to Halifax.  After several weeks apart I am looking forward to being greeted at midnight by my soul mate, my wife.  With unforeseen and temporary location differences, we sometimes joke with each other as to where "home" really is!  Fort McMurray, Alberta (where we now live)?  Halifax, Nova Scotia (where we used to live)?  Miramichi, New Brunswick (where we began our married lives together)?

Fill in the blank:  Home is where _________.  What came to your mind?  Home is where my family is.  Home is where my heart is.  Home is where my love is. Home is where my job is.  Home is where memories are made.  Home is wherever I am right now.  Home is where friends gather.  Home is wherever I feel safe and wanted.  Maybe “home” for you is not at all a happy word to consider!

For Christians, there is an inner longing for the home that is greater than all homes.  The Apostle Paul puts it this way, “I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.  But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live (here).” Philippians 1:23, 24. Evangelist Billy Graham just published his latest book entitled, “Where I Am”.  He has been questioned innumerable times, “Where is heaven?” His quick response continues to be, “heaven is where Jesus is.”  This response arises from the biblical passage in John 14.  Jesus said, “I am going to prepare a place for you.  When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”  This world as it now functions, is not our home, we are just passing through.  Those who claim Christ look forward to that home far better than we could ever imagine, our forever family in His forever home!
