Meaningful Baptism

Step by step we walked deeper into the waters of the river.  The current was getting swifter yet not so rapid as to cause me to lose my footing.  The sun reflected off the waves creating a mirror-like image.  The church leader who assisted me in my walk out into the water released me to the pastor of my church.

I was a teenager and this was my baptism day.  On shore there were those who sang “Shall we gather at the river” and “O happy day!”  “Have you trusted Jesus as your Lord and Savior and do you desire to follow Him?” asked my pastor.   With my affirmative response, he proclaimed, “We now baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”  With that I was immersed into the waters of my baptism.

When I came by faith to Christ, a relationship with God was established. Yet, the day I was baptized was the day I publicly acknowledged my personal faith in Christ.

What a meaningful day!  It still causes me to pause and reflect.  “Buried with Him in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life.”  With people applauding and others singing, I was led back to the shore where I was received with smiles, promises of prayer and a towel with which to dry myself.  Others took the same step of obedience that day – a joyful step of following the Lord Jesus.  “Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward change.”  When I came by faith to Christ, a relationship with God was established.  Yet, the day I was baptized was the day I publicly acknowledged my personal faith in Christ.

Personal became public.  Have you been baptized since you believed?
