Down yet up!?

I found the words to describe it!  By now you probably know that I am a lover of rivers.  I was raised on the banks of a river so perhaps that has formed my interest.  It was shortly after our arrival in Fort McMurray of Northern Alberta that I noticed the direction in which the rivers were flowing.  It seemed to me somewhat confusing.  For instance, the Athabasca River was flowing down yet heading up north.  Down yet up!?  What words could I use to explain this direction?  I recently completed reading the informative and delightful book on Northern Alberta entitled “More than Oil” by Frances Jean.  Embedded in this book, I found the phrase used by a pilot of the region that perfectly fits the direction of the rivers.  He defined the direction as ‘down north’.  I thought, that’s it, the rivers flow ‘down north’!

The Lord Jesus often challenged the spiritual direction of people’s lives.  Many of His statements were directional.

The direction we “flow” in our spiritual lives takes on an even greater importance.  The Scriptures speak often of the direction we are taking in life.  By virtue of our ability to choose, we may go to God or turn from God.  Where we eventually end up is determined by the direction in which we are headed.  The Lord Jesus often challenged the spiritual direction of people’s lives.  Many of His statements were directional.  “I am the light of the world.  If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT).  “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”  (Matthew 11:28).  Have we recently considered the spiritual ”flow” of our lives?  Direction determines destiny!  Godward brings forgiveness and peace.
