Mountain Lion and the Birchwood Trails. The Birchwood Trails, weaving their ways through the forest surrounding the communities of Fort McMurray North, are awesome! So far I have enjoyed walking these trails in all four seasons. Each season displays the trails beauty in its own particular way. Hikers (I call myself a walker because the pace of hikers far exceeds my speed), joggers, cross-country skiers, bikers and innumerable canines share these delightful paths. However, it appears we may not be the only ones sharing the journey! The local paper, My McMurray, carried an article recently indicated that perhaps a mountain lion was also on one of these trails. I have not been able to verify this possible sighting. Be that as it may, I shall continue to enjoy these trails on leisurely walks (did I already say that my pace will not burn off many calories). I am always alert however (bear spray and all)! I do not intend that the local paper run an article “local clergy’s hiking boots found but clergyman still missing!”
Stand firm and be strong in your confidence in the presence and power of God Almighty! The Bible says that Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
Seriously though, I am reminded of the words recorded in the Bible by Peter, one of the leaders of the first century church. “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him and be strong in your faith.” 1 Peter 5:8, 9 NLT. There is much beauty in this world. The wonders of nature, the diversity of cultures and the love emanating from caring persons. Yet we would be naïve not to recognize that the devil is a real personage, the instigator of much evil and many devastating conflicts. Yet, there is One who is infinitely greater than this ancient enemy of humanity. Stand firm and be strong in your confidence in the presence and power of God Almighty! The Bible says that Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Revelation 5:5 NLT. The roaring lion who sometimes crosses our path is no match for Jesus, the ascended One who sits on the right hand of the Majesty on High. I have always loved the reassuring words of Jesus, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT. Yes, stay alert, but continue to enjoy the trails of life knowing that we who have trusted Christ as Lord and Saviour, never walk alone. So, strap on your cross-country skis and hit the trails!
