Unless the roots go deep and the foundation is well constructed, fruit is visibly scanty and the building will be in danger of collapsing. Paul, the Apostle, wrote to the church in Colossae, “Just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow Him. Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him.” Below the surface of the trees that offer shade and beauty, there are the networks of roots drawing life from the soil. We all know the inadequacies of constructing a house upon an unstable foundation. In permafrost territory establishing a firm foundation is especially challenging.

Those of us who by the grace of God have accepted Christ and follow Him, need to continually deepen our faith. Recent reflections on the Book of Colossians remind us of the need to be rooted in the message of Christ: He died for our sins and rose on the third day. Christ by His Spirit lives in us, so we build upon the foundation of Who He is. We are to be rooted in the higher lifestyle as those who intentionally live for Christ. We also welcome traveling companions because deeper relationships cause our journey with Christ to be both sustainable and enjoyable. We devote ourselves to prayer. The roots of common and continuous conversations with God strengthen our faith and open our eyes to the souls around us who need the Lord.
